Visit the Serpentine’s new pavilion: Continuing with the art theme, this month also sees the highly anticipated opening of Bangladeshi architect, Marina Tabassum’s Serpentine Pavilion, entitled, A Capsule in Time — which also marks the 25th year of the Serpentine Pavilion commission. Inspired by Bengali wedding tents and incorporating four sculptural capsules, this pavilion looks at themes of impermanence, light, and connection.
Expect a translucent facade as well as kinetic elements, that results in shifting interplay of shadow and form. To celebrate the milestone, as always, there will be a glitzy summer soiree attended by cultural and creative figures, celebrating the pavilion’s role for fostering architecture, innovation, and community, and this year it’ll be hosted by Cate Blanchett.
LONDON, UNITED KINGDOM – JUNE 03: A view of the Serpentine Pavilion titled ‘A Capsule in Time’, designed by award-winning Bangladeshi architect Marina Tabassum, is seen at Serpentine South during a press preview in London, United Kingdom, on June 03, 2025. Marking the 25th edition of the Serpentine Pavilion series, the structure is composed of four wooden capsules arranged around a semi-mature ginkgo tree, emphasizing harmony between architecture and nature. With its interplay of light and shadow and a movable component, the pavilion offers visitors a dynamic and contemplative space. (Photo by Rasid Necati Aslim /Anadolu via Getty Images)

Bettina Korek, Chief Executive, and Hans Ulrich Obrist, Artistic Director, says of this year’s pavillion, “A Capsule in Time will honour connections with the Earth and celebrate the spirit of community. Built around a mature tree at the centre of the structure, Tabassum’s design will bring the park inside the Pavilion. Its kinetic dimension will also harken back to the levitating element of Rem Koolhaas & Cecil Balmond with Arup’s Serpentine Pavilion 2006.
